End football, begin basketball

That's a sad Avery after his team's last game for the season on November 4th.

We had a nice three week break before basketball started this Saturday. Yikes!

Get the vote out!

On the way home from picking up our last Blooming Glen Farm crop share this after noon (I know, I'm barely holding it together), Avery and I voted.

It was one of those "got to love a small town moments": we ran into an old neighbor in the parking lotn and a new one inside the polling place, a little Mennonite Church right in town where retired seniors looked up my name and showed me to the booth. Adorable, right? Mr. Avery took some photos (well, I took the first one.) (And, in case you don't notice, his new thing is not smiling for photos.) (Lovely, having a tween child, isn't it?):

Avery Cain's fist day of school!

Rodney (Avery's rock star dad) came over to give the monster some first day of school hugs and "good lucks."

Jason, Rodney and I loaded him up with his backpack and lunchbox, and sent him out the door.

His name on his desk - in cursive!

His new classroom is so cool! Big windows, bright blue floor and two awesome teachers. Avery and Grandpa Dan went shopping earlier last week for school supplies; here's his unloaded backpack.

I can't believe it... fourth grade. He's such a little man, so tall and so silly and so caring. Being a mom makes me cry sometimes...

First football game

Thoughts about Avery's first game:
  • Bobbleheads
  • We have the loudest coach EVER
  • Ernesto made the field nice and muddy
  • Bright, bright sun
  • Beautiful, beautiful son

Have an awesome season, Braves!

Avery Cain is a Vegetarian!

I was tucking in my monster and he told me that he decided to become a vegetarian... Details to follow!

Ready! Set! Hike!

Mr. Avery Cain began football on August first. He's never played before.

His team is the Souderton Braves. And practice is FOUR NIGHTS A WEEK. Until school starts. Then, it's only two nights a week, with games on the weekends.

Dear football players,

Please don't squish my son. Thank you.

Warmest regards,
Mikaela

Now, what to do with those toe-may-ters?

At Blooming Glen last week, cherry tomatoes were pick-your-own. Avery has very little love for tomatoes; he likes sauces, salsas and pico de gallo, but won't touch them plain. Given that, he was wondering what we would do with all of them:

Of course, because they are cherry tomatoes, pico de gallo and sauce just seemed a bit labor intensive. (Not so for the larger ones!) While Jase and I used them in salads and as snacks, Avery was left to his own devices. Thankfully, he came up with something:

An untraditional use of cherry tomatoes, yes. But acceptable :) Or should that be, 8-)

Avery "The Helmet" Cain

I just received this photograph from my sexy, sweet and sassy girl, Jen.

It was taken at a gallery opening at the end of June, and features Avery "The Helmet" Cain and El Amerikano. Rawr!

The Helmet: an update

Thursday, May 25th:

That's monster eating dinner.

Friday, June 16th:

That's monster sleeping on my office floor.

Now, I realize this has been going on for quite a while at this point. About a month, I guess? The reason why we are not panicked is because we've noticed what I think is a critical point:

It's not so much that he always puts the helmet on, it's that he never takes the helmet off.

As in, he moves from skateboarding outside (where he is required to wear it) to eating dinner inside to running to the store to visiting a friend. It's important to note that in between the daily going ons of his life, he always takes the opportunity to skate if it presents itself. He's had to come to work with me on a couple occasions since school let out, and in between reading Shel Silverstein and making comic books, he pops outside to skate the parking lot. He's a very active little man (hence the passing out on the floor) and I'm thinking that it's just easier to leave the helmet on.

But, because we're such awesome and caring parents, we're still keeping our eyes on the situation and monitoring his paranoia - stay tuned for updates!

Philadelphia holiday

We stayed in Philadelphia this weekend for the Wizard World Comic Convention. The convention was fun (especially for the boys), but I think the visit to Cereality in University City was the real winner this trip. Seriously? You need to go.

We usually stay at the Holiday Inn Express in Midtown because it's cheap and they have a pool. A pool on the roof. I mean, it's like, we're automatically the Coolest Parents on Earth when we stay there. However, this trip we stayed at Loew's Philadelphia, because the Holiday Inn was booked. We had an awesome experience at Loew's. It was the best customer service we've ever had a hotel. Everyone was friendly and knowledgeable and pleasant - the housekeepers, the valet, the front desk people - everyone! The only thing we were disappointed with was the charges a la carte-style for the amenities. Ten bucks to use the gym...? Otherwise though, it was really a great, great experience :o)

On the way out of town, we stopped at FDR skatepark. Jason didn't have his deck, but AveryCain let him borrow his so he could hop on the ramp (not the 12 foot one!). Most of the time, though, Avery rode the concrete section of the park and Jason and I watched.

The best part of the entire weekend though, is the picture of Avery we found on the camera, and placed here at the bottom right (click on it for a larger version). It has got to be the best photograph I have of him. He's so happy, so natural and so unbelievably beautiful. And, that's Jase on the left - the one Avery's smiling at. Damn. I love my boys!

Yay for mini-holidays! :-D

The Helmet

How could we have these photographs and not share?

I thought you guys might get a smile out of these photographs. Avery Cain recently decided that it'd be a good idea to *always* wear his helmet - not just while skateboarding. While sleeping, while at school..."In c
ase a piano falls through the ceiling." "What if I fall out of bed?" "While we're driving."

Jason and I aren't at the point of intervening with therapy to discuss irrational fears yet. We're too busy laughing. Motherhood is awesome :o)

Have a great week!

Love,
m.

And yes, he is wearing his pajamas to school. That'a a whole other story!
